VLV Updates

There's a new vegan restaurant in town, out in the suburbs, very close to Loving Hut. It's called Green Vegetarian Restaurant and Bar and is located at 1299 Logan Road, Mt Gravatt. I went here for dinner last night with friends Ange and Steve on the anniversary of the restaurant's first week open.

I had only just been saying to a friend in Melbourne that we don't have any restaurants in Brisbane that are "date" restaurants. As is, somewhere you can take someone to make a good impression. Most of the vegan places we have are cafe-style and not that up-market. Plus for my non-straight-edge friends and those who like to drink alcohol with meals, this is another option for them for dinner.

The opening page in the wonderfully professional menu explained that the food was all vegan and the owner (who along with his wife - the chef - has been catering for parties and functions for years) also advised that all meals were vegan:

We ordered the Taro Spring rolls - 4 for AU$5.90:

and the Special Vietnamese Ham AU$5.90:

which was something completely different than I normally would have and quite peppery. We also had Green's Spring Rolls delivered to us that we had not ordered, didn't really want, and even though we told the waiter/owner this we still paid for the spring rolls - 4 for AU$6.50:

The menu was quite extensive with a different page for each type of meal (see below for the photos) and as they had only been open a week there were a lot of menu items that weren't available. I ordered the Bok Choy with Mushroom Slice AU$12.50:

Plus we had rice in the shape of a love heart, cute:

Ange ordered the Stir Fry Chicken with Lemongrass Chilli AU$14.90:

I ate half of the bottom end of one of the chillies and was fine, but when I ate the top half of another chilli, it was way too hot and I couldn't cool my mouth down. Silly.

Steve had originally ordered the Stir Fry Potato with Mushroom but he was advised after awhile that it was no longer available and he instead ordered the Stir Fried Beef with Potatoes AU$14.50:

After dinner, Ange and I always like to follow up with something sweet, so we asked what desserts were available. There was a vegan carrot cake with icing, but after enquiring if there were any other flavours, this dessert was confirmed as not vegan as it had eggs in it. There seems to be a few things lost in translation as English is not the owner's first language. This is always a bit of a worry as to whether something is vegan or not...

There are a few teething issues that I hope are overcome and I hope to go back in a month or so to see the place full and successful. Make sure you check out Green Vegetarian Restaurant and Bar which is located on 1299 Logan Road just near Invermore Street in Mount Gravatt. The contact number is 07 3343 5568 and they are open 7 days for lunch and dinner: Monday-Friday 10am-2:30pm then 5:30-8:30pm. Saturday 10am-9pm and Sun 11:30am-8pm.
